How to Move House While Working From Home

Moving house can be stressful and overwhelming, and it’s even more so when your office is your home. However, there are organizational tips to make the move easier, such as making lists, throwing out old stuff, and gathering a list of moving supplies beforehand. Once you have a list of what you’ll need and the things you need to do, you’ll remove some of the stress. As you remember details of things to buy or what kinds of boxes to get, you can continue to add to your list. You can then go about tackling each step one by one.

Isolate Your Work Area

Before you start throwing random things into boxes, decide what you will need for your work. Then, isolate your workspace. This should include your desk, computer (or laptop), and any office essentials you use daily. You will also need to decide what times you will do your packing. It’s probably a good idea to complete your remote work before you start any moving chores. It’s also wise to work backwards from the final moving day and then do a little packing every day. Set aside an hour or so a day, and try to accomplish more on weekends.

Make a List

Make a moving list. This should include things like purchasing moving supplies, purchasing or finding boxes, changing your address, disconnecting your internet, turning off your electricity by a certain date, throwing out anything you no longer need, and more. Once you have a detailed moving list, start tackling the to-do steps one by one.

Throw Out Anything You Won’t Need

Over years, we all tend to collect things we never end up using much. Go through each room and throw out everything you don’t need. Ask family members to make piles of what they want and don’t want. Toss out anything you won’t be taking with you. You can trash them, donate them, or sell them. This will make your moving project a lot easier.

Buy Your Supplies

Duct tape and boxes are essentials when you’re moving. You will also need bubble wrap for cushioning, old newspapers to wrap kitchen items, plastic bags for smaller items, labels, and markers. You can either purchase your moving boxes or visit a store that has no use for theirs. Some supermarkets or neighborhood grocery stores may be able to give you their old boxes. If finding moving boxes is a challenge, don’t worry. A professional moving company can box and wrap all your items. Just organize them in sections so it’s easier for the movers. You can also get creative. Instead of boxes, use suitcases, bags, and pillowcases to help store your clothes.

Start Packing Room by Room

Start packing items that you don’t use frequently or that you don’t see yourself using for the next two months. These can be games, toys, photo albums, or anything that you’ve put away in storage. Leave the kitchen, bathroom, and your work area for last. Remember to label everything so that you can find your items when you’re unpacking. Do a little everyday (and more on weekends). You’ll do a better job if you spread the packing out over days.

If you have to work on the day the movers come, find a corner that’s out of their way and set yourself up with your laptop while they haul your boxes in and out of your home. This way, you’ll be there to answer any of their questions, and you’ll also get a few hours of work done.

Moving can be overwhelming and unpleasant, especially if you’re unorganized. However, if you have to move while working from home, these tips can make the task a lot easier before the movers come.
